Horsepower
From your car, to your well motor power of almost every engine you deal with are calculated in horsepower.None of this things seemingly nothing to do with horse,so where did that measurement come from?
Well, actually horses. In the early days of steam engine inventor and engineer James Watt made some significant improvement to the Newcomen steam engine and attempted to market and sell his new version. This was easy enough when watt dealing with the people who already have a Newcomen engine and could directly compare engine output of old engine with his new version.
Some potential customers didn't have a steam engine at all yet, were they are still using draft horses to move there weight and power machinery. He deeded a way to explain his engine in a way that these people would understand.
He worked out the idea of horsepower while watching the some horses lift coal at mine and he also watched a horse turn a mill.He determined that the horse can do a 33,000 foot-pounds of work in a minute and dubbed that a 1 horsepower. He then used that as a way to make comparison of horse and his machinery and told that his steam has power of equivalent to the 10 horses power. From then every machine power Measurements done in Horsepower.
